Neophytes built an irrigation system that brought water to the mission.
water and irrigation
At Mission Santa Barbara the neophytes were responsible for building systems that would bring water from Pedragoso Creek, located two miles away, to the mission site. There were two stone aqueducts that carried the water. One would store the water in a reservoir, while the other would bring drinking and bathing water directly to the mission. This elaborate system, completed in 1806, helped the people at the mission survive. The citizens of Santa Barbara use some of the sections of this waterway today.
